Going on Circuit

The foreign courts in China did not just sit in Shanghai. Here is an article about the US Court for China heading out on a northern circuit taking a "contingent of Shanghai attorneys" with it. First stop Tianjin, then Dalian by steamer, Changchun by train and finally Harbin.

British judge Skinner Turner recalled going to Harbin to try a murder case:

This meant a journey of some 3,000 miles altogether by sea and land; in addition to court staff I had to take with me the Crown Advocate to prosecute and a lawyer to defend; and as the prisoner was convicted he had to be brought back to Shanghai under escort.

Can't have been much fun travelling with someone under a sentence of death.
